Who am I ?

Who I am ?

I am a mother and wife. I am a Polish immigrant trying to find a suitable place for me in my new country. But first of all I feel I am a woman. However also a human being. And I do not agree to define myself by the way I look; the way most media force me to. I realize myself in many different ways. I have rich inner life. I want to be seen as a citizen, valued employee, and responsible parent. Not only as a target of famine magazines.

There are many interpretations of the word "woman" or "femininity".
Beauty is connected to women not without a reason- issues related to outer look in media- in press, television or Internet are nowadays very popular. These topics seem important for women. Posts on various websites indicate woman take their image quite seriously, sometimes maybe too seriously. " I want to be beautiful", " I want to be slim", I want to be attractive"- these words are repeated regardless the age. They are used whether we meet with a teenager or with a retired person, with a mother-to-be or walking with newborn.

Almost every female newspaper, magazine, broadcast dictates how a modern woman should look, what she should wear, how she should do her hair, what make-up is the best to use. Fashion is present everywhere- in shop windows, on streets or on TV. Today's fashion almost inseparably connects with pursuit for skinny look. It seems women try to motivate their actions by health issues for example, but don't they cheat themselves? Aren't they captivated by omnipresent opinions? Are not their efforts caused by not sufficient amount of self-esteem? Maybe they allowed themselves to feel guilty for some reasons?

Beauty is a changeable category- the primal images of women, goddesses were mostly, let us say, endowed with significant fatty tissue. Looking deeply in the past we find for example Rubens women. Since the forties of XX century the obligatory silhouette has tended to be slimmer and slimmer. The supermodel Twiggy changed dramatically the image of desired woman. This model of female body is still regarded as perfect. But slowly with the dominant role of media in our life the culture of beauty has changed into the cult or, unfortunately the terror of beauty. The body and outer look play the key role, especially in the advertisements preaching stereotypes.
The creation of the style begins very early- enough to mention Barbie doll. And go on and on .But beside everything most important is to find "yourself", not be copy of somebody from cover of magazine or TV idol.
