Women in Film... and TV!

Actors turned directors are my favorite, and actresses turned directors are even better! One of my recent favorites is Courtney Cox. While I loved Friends, my interest in her dwindled with Cougar Town. I gotta say, I didn't love it. But when I heard that she was making her own Lifetime Movie: Tall, Hot Blonde, it sounded really interesting. Especially because it was being directed by one of my favorite childhood actresses.
Turns out it was really interesting. Cox did a good job turning up the drama. She had two perfect actors for the job: Garret Dillahunt and Lauren San Giacomo, who play the perfect withered married couple. I won't give too much away in case anyone wants to see it, but the husband falls in love with someone that he meets on the internet who calls herself by the movie's title: "Tall, Hot Blonde." The movie was a slightly stereotypical portrayal of how a lot of relationships either fall apart or begin because of the internet, but Cox does a good job making it a heart wrenching story of how the online dating game can go wrong. It was a precursor to the new MTV series Catfish, which, if anyone has seen an episode understands just how easily an online relationship can break a heart once the truth is revealed. Cox seems to understand how the online medium affects people and how enticing/addictive it can be, and she uses that knowledge to the fullest. While it seems she is confined to working in the television world, I believe in her and I really think she could branch out into feature films. She would probably be able to direct some great indie movies. The made for TV movie premiered in June of this year, and was actually based on a documentary with the same title that came out in 2009 about a real life murder related to online dating jealousy.
Reviews of the movie weren't fantastic; with bloggers saying that it was just another cheesy Lifetime production. But I thought it wasn't bad at all and some online reviews said it was good. I saw nowhere that said it was bad. The problem that I see, however, is that I think she has been pigeon-holed as her role of a TV actress. It is not uncommon these days that an actor will become a director. But Cox was specifically a television actress and her movie roles have been limited to small ones or in films that were not extremely popular ones. Therefore I don't know if her work as a director or producer will ever get the recognition it deserves. Especially as a woman, she may never get to showcase a quality production because she is known mainly for her role as Monica on Friends. Being a woman, her work may also be restricted to only being recognized as projects that are "dramas" or "chick flicks." I think if a famous man had been behind the lifetime movie it may have been more popular or might have gotten better reviews because it is very hard for women to shed their persona for a new one in this day and age. For men, easy-peezy.
Cox even is primary owner of Coquette Productions, a production company that she started with her then husband David Arquette in 2003 and has produced several TV shows and movies. With her former career as an actress it is no surprise that Cox knows how to direct actors and make a production interesting. The auteur of a film is basically the director, whose vision and distinct style is supposed to shine through in a film product. In this case, Cox's acting style seemed to be similar to the film's mood: serious, down to earth, realistic and fun. Even though it was a Lifetime movie, she did a great job making it realistic and not ultra-dramatized.
