A Place In This World

SUMMARY

For a long time, I have always been passionate about storytelling in a variety of mediums whether it comes in the form of a play, screenplay, novel, or news article. For my final project, I wanted to write a screenplay short in hopes of submitting it to writing competitions in the future.

The coming-of-age narrative will tell the story from the perspective of Abby, a
young girl in a pivotal moment in her life: the period when a female is no longer a teenager but not yet a woman. She is especially vulnerable when her mother forces her out of the house, at the suggestion of her boyfriend. All alone with no one to turn to, she struggles emotionally and financially when adjusting to the new reality of living on her own.

She goes to her cousin's house with two luggages in tow hoping that she can stay there in the meantime but is unexpectedly rejected. She ends up going to her high school and sleeps in the school shower stalls, next to the gym where she has a confrontation with the school 'slut' Jade. It dawns on her at that moment that she is in fact homeless and alone. In a surprising turn of events, Jade has a soft spot for Abby after seeing her pick up a dirty sandwich from the floor and eats it. Together, they form a nice bond and along the way, they learn about survival and friendship in this touching narrative.
