Global Network Spark > leading to Global progress
In "Grandmother Power: A Global Phenomena" book, photojournalist Paola Gianturco documents activist grandmother worldwide who are bringing their communities
together culturally, socio-ecnomucally, educationally and health wise. Gianturco has documented women lives in 5 countries and has created 5 philanthropic projects. In the case of this book, their is a website which serves as a network for each grandmother organization she covers in her book- with links to individual project and different ways for a viewer to particpate and get involved. One hundred percent of the royalties from the book go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign which supports grandmothers in African countries who are caring for children whose parents have died from AIDS.
"There are more grandmothers on the planet than at any other time in history. For thousands of years, there were none; people simply didn't live beyond the age of about 30. Now, at least in the developed world, grandmothers are healthier, better off and younger than ever before."
Some of the women have been in the book have been forced, or knew someone, who at one point in their lives had to partake in either a tradition or system of patriarchy beyond their will. for example Paola documents Filipino grandmothers who demand justice by requesiting "a place in history books so their experience will never be repeated" for having been forced into sex slavery during WWII and Grandmothers advocating against feminine genital mutilation in Africa. Woen who now as elders are using their experience as women
to advocate and educate young women toward change.
