Another Alternative Media

This is a trailer for a film called The Grace Lee Project. The filmmaker's name is Grace Lee, and she wants to go all around America and look for all the Grace Lees and find how the other Grace Lees feel about being called Grace Lee. It's also her way of showing that there is stereotype within the name of Grace Lee, she's 5'2, she's quiet, nice, and smart.

  2. Love that you posted this trailer, I was actually going to use The Grace Lee Project in my post.If anyone hasn't watched it, its a great film. Not only does the director (Grace Lee) search for all the Grace Lees in the country to show their similarities, she also shines light on typical stereotypes of Asian women: being smart, nice, quiet. While she goes to find similar Grace Lees, she also spotlights "exceptional" Grace Lees whose lives have countered notions of Asian femininity. Such as featuring the activist Grace Lee Boggs: a Chinese American who was heavily involved in the African American community. Overall great film that does more than expose Asian American female stereotypes, she critiques them and shows that there is more to these Grace Lees than the stereotypes.

  3. I think the trailer was quite interesting, they propose even names can trigger us to put other people into categories. Even though like in this case it's a "positive stereotype", it's not very healthy to do. When someone is expected to be smart, the other who arent suffer. They are held at higher standard and if they happen to not be the perfect cookie cutter shape then they are seen almost as if defective. I think this is a great way to open up the eyes of the audience from the usual stereotypical povs of mainstream media. That as we encounter people to experience them and not to put a box around them and say, "But you're supposed to be like this."
